At least it looked like my room
I was in the same house and same bedroom, but it looked like the future
It was clear, full-colour and as real-looking as being awake in this world
My bed is in a different position in the room. Set in the middle of the South end of the room, with my feet facing North
Where as my bed is now, normally (as it has been for 7-8 years) against the South wall with my feet facing East
I pick up a measuring cup next to my bed I use for feeding my tropical and native fish in the morning
I have a large tank with clown loaches, kuhlii loaches, black widow tetra, black neon tetra, runny nose tetra and guppies
But the tank also contains some beautiful and (relatively) rare native fish Mary River rainbowfish, only found in particular creeks off one particular river in the world and a school of threadfin rainbowfish that are only found in one particular swamp in the world
I say relatively rare, but the fish are not endangered, or as risk. It is just rare for them to be seen inside someones fish tank
I am probably one of the only people in the world that has them in a home aquarium
I tell you this, to give you context and understand why I freak out in a moment
For some reason I have left the feed cup by the bed, which I never do
And for some reason it has a dried version of the bloodworms I normally feed them in the bottom of the cup
As if it had been left out in the sun to dry out all the water and harden
I add water from another cup next to my bed to redehydrate the contents of the cup, and the dried contents on the bottom not only form hydrate back into food, it is live food. A small school of tiny fish
Something that confuses me for a moment. But the fish will love it
I walk out to do my morning routine and pour it in the tank, but now the cup of covered in ants as well somehow
The fish won't mind. They probably love eating some live ants off the surface of the water, so I tip the cup into the tank and wash it through the water
Then I notice the neon light is not working on the tank
Not just this, but the water-level is way higher than I set it to
My sister, who lives with me, is there and I ask her about why the water-level is so high and the the light isn't working, while I try fix it, by re-seating the tube
The light comes on and the tank water is milky
So milky, that I can't see anything in the tank
I instantly freak out, realising something very bad has happened
I look on the shelf above where all the food and medications sit, but they are gone
They must be in the tank!
I stick my hand into the tank as quickly as I can go pull out the bottles which must be leaking in the tank. There is formaldehyde and all sorts of different poisons that could be leaking in the water
Of course, in the real world, the bottles wouldn't leak, they would simply float in the water, but it all happened so quickly, I didn't have time to rationalise anything but what must have happened for the water to be so milky
But in the water I found nothing
I couldn't feel anything in the tank at all
"There is nothing in there" I told me sister. "No fish. No ornaments. No plants. Nothing"
As I'm standing there looking at the tank, reasoning how this could be possible, trying to work out what happened ...
Reality starts shifting
My vision flashes between layered realms and realities
I could have even been moving through time
The tank stayed almost exactly the same, but everything about it flashed between different realities
The contents of the tank shifted
I saw a tank with a turtle in it, instead of fish
Then flashes of different tank set ups
Some with different ornaments
Some with logs
Some with different fish. Different lighting
"Hold on", I said to my sister. "I think my vision is returning"
Though it felt a little strange to me that the dimensions of reality were visibly shifting in front of my eyes, it felt more as though I was confused, and a little annoyed, as to 'why' it was happening
I focused on the tank and it felt like I was concentrating on realigning the correct version of reality
Like manually tuning in an old television set
Returning myself back to my native world/realm and reality
The tank eventually returned to normal, like flicking through different channels, overlayed on top of each other
The turtle and all other versions of the tank disappeared and I was back where I should be
I woke up here, for real this time, in my bed
And immediately went out to check on my fish. Who were thankfully, all alive and happy
